Access to information diffusing in a given network may be a much stronger predictor of productivity than traditional human capital variables such as education or industry experience.

I’m betting heavily on the value of information. From everything I have seen in the field and every interaction I have witnessed, I know that not much gets done without timely access to information. And virtually nothing gets done well. This is true for both societal progress in general and for specific organizations. Collective, shared information is the very bedrock of progress. Without it, countless resources would be wasted as each organization, and ultimately each society, continuously reinvented every wheel. Without the very real benefits of collective ideas and progress, we are stuck. We know this, and yet the exact value of collective knowledge eludes us. It seems almost intangible; how do you put a number on it? Luckily, researchers in Boston are trying to do just that. Their results might surprise you.

Evidence suggests that methods of organization are taught and perpetuated as societal innovations. Understanding and teaching organization may go a long way towards alleviating poverty.

Individuals working side by side, but not together, can never be more than additive in their production. One worker’s product is added to another and then another to eventually become a community’s productivity. In contrast, organization is a multiplier. Studies on manufacturing companies provide direct evidence of this effect. Those that employ over 200 people are over 10 times more productive in terms of value added per employee than companies with less than 50 people.

adhaar has the potential to be integrated into the greater financial network of India, garnering the benefits of inexpensive credit that can only be achieved by people who have proven themselves to be creditworthy. But there’s still work to be done before this can be successful.

Aadhaar, A 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is getting serious. Since the first Aadhar was issued in 2010, the initiative has grown to include nearly 90 percent of Indians, including 99 percent of adults over eighteen years of age. Linked to demographic and biometric data as well a person’s financial institutions and accounts it has been heralded as the most sophisticated identification system on the planet. Though not without critics, namely people and organizations concerned about security and the possibility of big-brother-style government surveillance, the Aadhaar program has been championed by top World Bank chief economist Paul Romer, the United Nations, and the International Monetary Fund.

The first ever set of environmental awareness and education activities for our employees were organized as part of Green Office Week from 17th to 22nd September. This green initiative was aimed at creating awareness and sharing actionable tips to impart a sense of responsibility in our employees towards our environment. This was done through a series of educational emails in vernacular languages on the environmental impact of exploitation of resources such as paper, water and plastics and simple actionable tips for conservation and judicious use of these resources. As part of the tree planting drive, our staff and members enthusiastically planted 996 saplings across various locations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Our teams across all the regions also participated in an online Fun Quiz on environment conservation and competed for the winning spots.
